My latest projects

I have been up to no good lately. For some reason I can't get my hands on enough "crafty" projects (I honestly hate the word crafty because it brings up images of women wearing appliqued vests all sitting around a table amidst a large array of baubles in some basement jabbering about their awful kids). Anywho- it seems to be something I quite enjoy so I won't make any excuses for the fact that I am indeed a craft nerd.

First up: this beauty I snagged at Goodwill for $50. And yes, I got those nice socks inside for free...yuck! This is the original color. I am sanding it down, painting it black and will add some super cute knobs I found at Hobby Lobby on sale! This will fit nicely in our dining room as a buffet table.

My friend Alison didn't realize what gems she had in these chairs. They used to be a light wood color with a pretty bad floral fabric on the seats. I fancied 'em up a bit with some black spray paint, drop cloths from Lowe's and cording.

This is a total knock off from some other truly creative woman's blog. I changed it up a bit with a little play on words at the bottom. After all of the "be somethings.." it simply states "Beloved" as a reminder of who we are in Christ. It's not at all straight and kind of looks like a 4th grader painted it, but I like it. I think I'm going to change the blue lettering to red just so it matches our living room more.

I had a price book play date with my friend Melissa a few weeks back and it totally inspired me to go on a total budget rampage. This month we finally decided to do something else since Lord knows I am NOT going to sit and enter receipts or keep a running log of how much I have spent on groceries, clothes, toiletries, etc. Simple solution: I have a checking account. When the money is gone, it's gone. It won't be as easy to just "borrow" from our joint checking account because I won't be able to feign ignorance as to whether or not I have gone over budget.
This month has been a lot of fun.
I have dubbed it "Budget Camp."
We have eaten a lot of rice and beans.
I have watched our pantry slowly get cleaned out.
I have been forced to use those random items that never seem to get eaten because you generally eat what you really like first, and then go back to the store to restock. All the while, there is plenty of food in the ole' pantry to feed the family for 5 days.
I also realized how many times I go to Chic Fil A for lunch because I am "too tired" to make lunch. I think I am saving money by just getting kids' meals. So silly. I have not done that once this month, which made it all the more fun when we did eat out. More like a treat than something expected. It has been very eye opening and very nice on our checking account.
I actually feel somewhat victorious! It is a good feeling knowing I am serving the Lord and my family well by being a good steward of what we have. This is what the pantry looks like on day 28 of budget camp. Still looks pretty full huh? (Kind of makes me a little ashamed when thinking about the people who would give their right arm to have this much food and here I consider it a sacrifice.)Middle left shelf is all of our spices and the bottom right is all of our baking goods. Normally there is stuff falling off the shelves because of the insane number of cereal boxes, bread, and other goodies. I am excited to buy more cereal next week, but it has not been the end of the world being without. The majority of the contents in our fridge is leftovers. We will eat them. Really. Because we have $6 in our checking account and I have to go buy diapers. And...I can actually see everything in our fridge! No scary science projects in the back with green liquid seeping out. Not that I have ever experienced that...
I hope this is something that sticks. Like glue. Or cooked spaghetti on the wall.
